Mann Ki Baat "Karo Naa" (Day 5) - 29th March 2020

Day 5 - 29th March - Mann Ki Baat

The habit of getting up early continued, woke up at 05:00 AM, thankfully fell asleep again. With last 4-5 days of overdrive, nothing much was left for cleaning or sanitization. After going through the morning routine of checking news and social media updates, it was time to pay attention to my physical and mental well being.

For last few days, even before the lock down started, lower back pain had been increasing. So I put out the mat and hit the floor after a break of almost 3 months - to practice yoga exercise. It has helped me a lot. In fact, put a watsapp status encouraging everyone to practice yoga. Check out the video below, these exercises have really helped me a lot.

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi addressed the nation today at 11:00 am in his monthly radio broadcast - Mann Ki Baat. This was PM's third address to the nation since 19th March 2020. Prime Minister publicly apologized for hardships people had to face due to the lock down.
All said and done, in the age when politician specially those in power remained aggressive to the extent of being arrogant, PM of a country seeking apologies from public was huge. In backdrop of migration crisis, the addressed was well time and had hit right chords with majority of Indian Public. While some were not impressed with no mention of migration crisis or steps being taken by the government to strengthen the medical infrastructure; others were moved by the ingenuity of the address including his long time critics. And I belonged to both the groups. From the messaging it eas clear that the PM cared little about elite public opinion. In the broadcast, there were other key messages:
  • People were warned that those violating the lock down were playing with their own lives.
  • Traditional Indian knowledge teaches us that it is better to control a disease during its outbreak else it acquires a furious nature
  • Social distance should not be taken as emotional distance. I was of the view that is should have been renamed physical distancing.
  • We should be grateful to those who are front line of defense against corona - doctors, medics, police etc.
  • PM spoke to some of the corona virus survivors. This definitely helped mitigate the fear and helplessness that the country was under.

On the home front, I cooked delicious Maggi for lunch. This particular brand of noodles had become synonymous with comfort food, hostel food, bachelor food and one of the most popular branded noodles in hills and mountains. Such was the craze that this was one of first items go out of stock at many places when the lock down was announced. Thankfully we had a pack.
Spoke with my sister's son today. Poor kid, he had been away from his mother for almost a month now but thankfully was safe and happy with grand parents at ancestral home. But that had not dampened his inquisitiveness. He was interested in knowing what we were doing at home during this lock down and if I also had been attending office during the lock down as his father was. For many of us who were safe inside our homes, there were few other who were out there, working to ensures essential goods and services gets delivered to those in need. Felt proud that we has many in our family. Video call had been saving the day, allowing people and kids to remain closely in touch. Spoke to his grand parents as well, they were keeping well and showered us with their blessings as always.

Things were settling down in the era of lock down. What was unsettling was the hardship of people still out there on highways and bus stands, hoping against hope. In some bizzare incidents, some helpless migrants were sprayed with disinfectants, most infamous being the incident in UP.
Help was coming from all corners. Governments, NGO, individuals all came out to help - best of human spirit coming to fore - with food and shelter. It did not end all the hard ships being endured, but definitely gave them a thread to hang on, a ray of light at the end of lock down tunnel.
